What to translate for each Shopify market: a checklist

A translated product page isn't finished until its SEO fields, URL handle and image alt text are translated too. Use this checklist for every language you publish.

When you add a language in Shopify Markets, Shopify publishes your store on a language URL such as /de/ and adds hreflang tags that point search engines to each version. What Shopify can't do is write the translations. Any field you leave untranslated shows up in the source language on the translated page.

Product pages

  • Product title and description
  • Variant and option names (for example, size and colour values)
  • SEO title and meta description
  • URL handle
  • Image alt text
  • Translatable metafields your theme shows (care instructions, materials, size charts)

Collections, pages and blog posts

  • Titles and descriptions
  • SEO titles and meta descriptions
  • URL handles

Store-wide text

  • Navigation menus
  • Theme text: buttons, cart and checkout labels, notifications
  • Text added by other apps, where the app stores it in a place Shopify's translation system can reach

Checking hreflang

Open a translated product page, view the page source and search for hreflang. You should see one <link rel="alternate"> tag per published language, each pointing to the matching page. Shopify generates these tags, so if one is missing, check that the language is published for that market.

FAQ

Common questions

What content gets translated?

Products, variants, options, collections, metafields, SEO titles and descriptions, URL handles and image alt text. Content from other apps can be translated when that app stores its text where Shopify's translation system can reach it.

Does it work with Shopify Markets and my theme?

Yes. Civet uses the languages you publish in Shopify Markets, and your theme shows them through its own language selector. We don't add a widget. Shopify creates the language URLs and hreflang tags itself.
